Understanding High Blood Pressure: What You Need to Know

Dr. Julius N. Ngu, MD  ·  February 14, 2026

High blood pressure — also called hypertension — is often called the "silent killer." It rarely causes symptoms yet significantly raises the risk of heart attack, stroke, and kidney disease.

Understanding Your Numbers

Normal: below 120/80 mmHg. Stage 1: 130–139/80–89. Stage 2: 140+/90+.

Lifestyle Changes That Work

  • Reduce sodium to less than 2,300 mg/day
  • Exercise 30 minutes most days
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Limit alcohol and quit smoking
  • Manage stress through mindfulness or yoga

If your reading is consistently in Stage 1 or higher, schedule an appointment with Dr. Ngu to develop a personalized management plan.
